Want to hash? Common Q&A

Q: There been reports that a good number of people found companions and spouses through the hash?

[ Answer? ] A: Many of those same people first arrived at the hash following a divorce. That said, Hash is the best place to pick up, you even get to know your potential partner both when sober and drunk in the same day.

This is a very popular tradition in Hash groups to bestow membership and test the humour of potential members, is that after a Hound has completed  5 Hashes, the Religious Adviser (with input from the circle) will determine an appropriate HASH NAME for the individual.

The HASH NAME may be based on appearance, ability, advice from ‘friends’, personality and/or the whim of the pack. The issuance of the HASH NAME means acceptance into the Hash membership and is concluded with the individual being baptized with a “Down-Down” (a down in one drink). Hashers who join with a bona fide HASH NAME usually keep their old name to prevent confusion. This hash courtesy is important as many government, military and corporate hashers may belong to dozens of hashers over the course of their lifetime and many gain a certain notoriety at Interhashes under one specific handle.

Once a hasher is bestowed a HASH NAME, it is usually kept for life. However, many may change it when the opportunity arises as they move to other hashers and fewer still may request a change from the pack for various reasons. If this is allowed by local tradition (remember, this is part of the test for a sense of humor), the pack thinks long and hard for a HASH NAME that will usually be more humiliating or nasty than the last.

Be-aware

Being given a hash name is the ultimate accolade in hashing and it is only done when enough is known about you and your failings. Hash names are not meant to be honorific; indeed they are invariably derogatory or humiliating.
